The Jackson Story
Michael Holthouse refused to buy a turtle for his daughter’s growing menagerie of animals. She was determined to raise the funds herself. This determination and Holthouse’s willingness to nurture his daughter’s entrepreneurial spirit was the catalyst for bringing Lemonade Day to thousands of other children in Houston, Texas and eventually across the country.
The Jackson, Mississippi, story began even simpler: City Director Bria Griffith’s affection for delightfully sweet and tart lemony chess squares, another Southern treat. With Griffith’s passion for business and uplifting the community, she and a small group of her friends and supporters committed to make Lemonade Day Jackson happen. Through this innovative, educational program they are empowering children and youth in the metro Jackson area to take ownership of their lives and become the business leaders, social advocates, volunteers, and forward thinking citizens of tomorrow. This small team is continuing to grow and spread this message to youth across the state.
Each child that registers receives a backpack with an Entrepreneur Workbook that teaches them the lessons of Lemonade Day like creating budgets, setting profit-making goals, serving customers, repaying investors, and giving back to the community. Along the way, they acquire skills in goal-setting, problem solving, and gain self-esteem critical for future success. They keep all the money they make and are encouraged to spend some, save some and share some.
