Ladera Ranch, CA resident Shelly Ehler, who developed a poncho-style beach towel she sells under the name ShowNo, was chosen to appear on the ABC TV show "Shark Tank” in 2012. Ehler was one of 52 entrepreneurs selected from 24,000 applicants nationwide had the opportunity to convince a panel of five wealthy investors to help fund her home-based company. Ehler's product is a standard bath towel with a vertical opening in the middle hemmed with colorful fabrics and designs. The towel can be used as a cover-up, changing towel or laid flat for a beach towel. According to the show's executive producer Clay Newbill, Ehler was chosen for “Shark Tank” because she had a simple, effective product. "But more importantly, Shelly has amazing passion for her idea," Newbill said. "Her story illustrates perfectly what it sometimes takes to make it in America as an entrepreneur." Newbill also praised Ehler for not quitting during rough times as the recession hit her husband's business and they were forced to sell their house. "We felt she deserved the chance to pitch her idea to the sharks," Newbill said. "We understand that they have the power to change her life, and she deserved the shot to impress and convince them that this idea is a winner." A former teacher who is married with two sons, Mark and Clark, Shelly started off sewing the towels at home, then added an employee, and eventually hired a sewing contractor in downtown Los Angeles. Not only was Shelly one of the most liked and sought-after contestants on “Shark Tank,” but one of the “Sharks”, Lori Greiner, wrote her a check on the spot. It was a start of a great business partnership! She currently has contracts selling the towels at Legoland and Six Flags Magic Mountain’s water parks. Her product has also been showcased in various TV shows including NBC’s Today Show. Today, Show No towels are also available in Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon, as well as a variety of retail stores in Texas, California, and soon in other areas.
