Jaxson (Jax) and Ruby Smith, two kids from College Station, Texas, learned about business while having fun during Lemonade Day 2015. The adorable entrepreneurs set up their lemonade stand, called Jaxson and Ruby’s Lemonade, at the Skybreak Church on Sunday May 3 after worship services. While this was Jaxson’s second year participating in Lemonade Day, it was Ruby’s first.

“Jaxson and Ruby took turns greeting their customers, pouring the lemonade and handing their customers their order,” said Bettina Smith, the children’s mom. “They had an enormous amount of fun, met some great people and learned how to be entrepreneurs.”

The Smith children participated completely in the construction and operation of their lemonade stand, including painting and customer service. Portions of their proceeds will go to benefit the Skybreak Church and the Bryan-College Station chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

Youth Entrepreneurship: Steps to Success

Jaxson and Ruby found their entrepreneurial footing through the Lemonade Day curriculum. Through a 14 step process, Lemonade Day teaches children the fundamentals of business and enterprise. The end result is a fully functioning, and hopefully profitable, lemonade stand.

Kids involved in Lemonade Day learn all aspects of business, including marketing, investment, customer service, and inventory. While Lemonade Day encourages its participants to be as independent as possible, parent or mentor involvement is crucial for success. Parents and mentors typically help build the physical stand, transport their budding entrepreneurs to purchase supplies, and help set up their business on Lemonade Day.
