HOUSTON SUTER

Houston Suter

LEMONADE DAY CITY:

Bryan/College Station, TX

RECIPE NAME:

Houston's Ginger Lemonade Sorbet

INGREDIENTS:

3/4 cup water
2 1/2 cups granulated sugar
2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 6-8 large lemons)
1-2 tbsp lemon zest
2" piece fresh ginger, finely grated
Raspberries and mint leaves for garnish

DIRECTIONS:

Prepare ingredients: peel and grate ginger, zest and juice lemons.

Whisk water and sugar together in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat,
whisking occasionally, until the sugar has completely dissolved. This should take 1-2 minutes.

Remove from heat and stir in the grated ginger.

Allow to cool to room temperature.

Whisk in the lemon zest and lemon juice, and pour into a freezer safe container (I used a bread loaf pan).

Freeze until firm (about 2-3 hours).

Stir occasionally with a fork to break up any ice crystals.

Serve frozen as a sorbet. Don’t worry if it starts to melt, it tastes great as a slushy too.

A LITTLE MORE ABOUT HOUSTON AND HIS AWARD WINNING RECIPE:

After last year’s Best Tasting Lemonade Contest we talked about trying to put the next year’s entry in a hollowed-out lemon for judging to make it stand out from the others. My mom helped me look for a special recipe online. I picked two I thought I’d like best and would work with our plan to serve it in a lemon. One recipe was so good- the Ginger Lemonade Sorbet. Everyone liked it a lot. Mom found some little buckets in the wedding section at the dollar store that fit inside the hollowed-out lemons perfectly. That way the inside of the lemon wouldn’t change the flavor of the yummy sorbet. We added a raspberry and a mint leaf (from our mint plant in our front yard) as garnish. I was so excited to win Best Tasting Lemonade for Bryan/College Station!
