Donating Stock to Charity, DAF Grants and IRA Gifts in 2026
Every year, kids across the country do something small that turns out to be anything but. They start a business. A lemonade stand.
It sounds simple, and that is the point. Through Lemonade Day, youth in grades K through 8 walk the same path any entrepreneur does. They dream it, plan it, fund it, run it, and decide what to do with the profit. Along the way they build financial literacy, confidence, and real-world problem-solving skills that stick, the kind of foundation schools do not always have room to teach.
The results speak for themselves. In 2025 alone, more than 65,000 kids registered nationwide, saving money, opening bank accounts for the first time, and giving back to causes they care about. Since 2006, more than 1.6 million kids have been through the program, unlocking over $86 million in youth savings and $74 million donated back into local communities.
That is what your gift fuels. Not just a stand, but a kid's first real taste of being their own boss.
Giving Season is here. If you are weighing how to make your gift this year, some of the most tax-savvy ways to give are also some of the easiest. Here are three worth a look, along with the deadlines that decide whether your gift lands in this tax year or the next one.

One note before we get into it. Everything below is general information, not tax or legal advice. Which of these three makes sense for you depends on your income, your tax bracket, your age, and what is actually in your accounts, and those details change the answer more than most people expect. Please run your plan past your financial adviser or tax professional before you move any money. The gifts themselves take minutes once you have decided. Deciding well is the part worth a phone call.
1. Give through your donor-advised fund
If you have a donor-advised fund, recommending a grant to Lemonade Day is one of the simplest ways to give.
How to recommend your grant
- Log in to your fund provider's portal, such as Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, Vanguard Charitable, or your community foundation.
- Search for Lemonade Day. If the search comes up empty, search the legal name, P4L dba Lemonade Day, or the EIN, 20-4235269.
- Enter your grant amount and submit the recommendation.
- Most sponsors let you add a note. If you would like your gift directed to a specific city's program, say so there.
Grant checks are mailed by your fund sponsor, which usually takes one to three weeks. That timing is why the December deadline below matters.
If you are unsure how a DAF grant fits with the rest of your giving this year, your fund sponsor's donor services team can explain their side of it, and your tax professional can tell you whether it changes anything on your return.

2. Donate appreciated stock to charity
Giving appreciated stock instead of cash is often the most tax-efficient gift on this list, and it is the one most donors overlook.
How to donate stock to Lemonade Day, step by step
- Check the holding period. The shares must have been held for more than one year to get fair market value treatment. Shares held a year or less are deductible only at what you paid for them.
- Transfer the shares, do not sell them. This is the step that matters most. The moment you sell, you have triggered the capital gain and given up the main benefit.
- Start the transfer. The simplest route is our DonateStock page, which walks you through it and gives your adviser the DTC transfer instructions they need. You can also email fundraising@lemonadeday.org and we will send the instructions directly.
- Give your broker what they will ask for. That is the receiving brokerage and DTC number, the account name and number, the ticker symbol, and the number of shares. All of it comes from the DonateStock page or from us.
- Tell us it is coming. Incoming transfers frequently arrive with no donor name attached. A quick email to fundraising@lemonadeday.org is the difference between a properly acknowledged gift and an anonymous one we cannot thank you for.
- Watch the calendar. Transfers take several business days to settle, and both brokerages have to act. Mid-December is the practical cutoff, not December 31.
A stock transfer is difficult to undo once it settles, so it is worth having your financial adviser or tax professional look at the specific shares before you start.

3. Make a qualified charitable distribution from your IRA
If you are 70½ or older, you can send money straight from your IRA to Lemonade Day and skip the taxable income entirely.
In 2026 you can give up to $111,000 per person, or $222,000 for a married couple with separate IRAs. Because the funds move directly from your custodian to us, the distribution never counts as taxable income, and if you are 73 or older it also counts toward your required minimum distribution. (IRS Notice 2025-67)
Making the gift
- Talk with your financial or tax adviser about whether a QCD fits your situation. The rules here are unforgiving. Your age, the direct transfer requirement, and the way the gift counts against your required minimum distribution all have to line up, and a distribution that misses on any one of them cannot be reclassified as a QCD after the fact.
- Instruct your IRA custodian to make a qualified charitable distribution directly to P4L dba Lemonade Day. The money must go from the custodian to us. If it passes through your hands first, it is a taxable distribution and no longer a QCD.
- Give your custodian our tax ID number, 20-4235269.
- Email fundraising@lemonadeday.org so we know to watch for it. Custodian checks often arrive with no donor information.
Start early. Custodians get slow in December, and the distribution has to clear your account by December 31 to count for this tax year.

Frequently asked questions
Is Lemonade Day a 501(c)(3)?
Yes. Gifts are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. Our tax ID number is 20-4235269.
What legal name should I search for in my DAF or IRA portal?
Search for Lemonade Day first. If your provider does not find it, search P4L dba Lemonade Day or the EIN 20-4235269. Our mailing address is 1800 Augusta, Suite 240, Houston, TX 77057.
Is it better to donate stock or cash to charity?
If the stock has gained value and you have held it more than a year, donating the shares directly is almost always better. You avoid the capital gains tax and we receive the full value. If the stock has lost value, sell it first, take the loss, and donate the cash.
Will I get a receipt?
Yes. You will receive a written acknowledgment for any gift of $250 or more. For stock, it confirms the shares and the date received rather than a dollar value, because the IRS puts the valuation on the donor. For a QCD, we acknowledge the gift and confirm that no goods or services were provided in exchange.
What is the last day to give and still deduct it in 2026?
December 31 for online gifts and for checks postmarked that day. Earlier for everything that depends on a broker, a custodian or a fund sponsor. See the deadline table above.
Can I direct my gift to a specific city's Lemonade Day program?
Yes. Note it when you recommend the grant, or email fundraising@lemonadeday.org and we will make sure it is routed correctly.
One story, many chapters
However you choose to give, through a DAF, stock, or your IRA, your support helps kids turn a dream into a real, running business. As we look ahead to our 20th year in 2027, every gift this season helps write the next chapter of that story, one stand, one kid, and one cup at a time.
